David E. Weiss was appointed mayor of Shaker Heights on April 9, 2018 following a more than 30-year successful career as an attorney and real estate business executive. An engaged leader and consensus builder, he has pledged to work closely with the leadership of the Shaker Schools and Shaker Library, other civic and business organizations, neighborhood groups, and residents to build bridges, strengthen neighborhoods, and expand growth opportunities for all in order to ensure Shaker’s continued success.
As a former member of Shaker’s City Planning Commission/Board of Zoning Appeals (1998-2002; 2009-2018), and City Council (1996-1999), Mayor Weiss brings a wealth of community and economic development experience as well as fiscal expertise to the mayor’s office. He has demonstrated the ability to bring groups together through collaborative leadership, finding creative solutions to challenging issues. Prior to his appointment, Mayor Weiss had a distinguished career at DDR Corp., a NYSE-listed real estate investment trust where he served as an executive officer for 18 years, most recently as Executive Vice President, Secretary and General Counsel. Prior to joining DDR, Mayor Weiss was a partner with McDonald, Hopkins, Burke & Haber Co. LPA, a Cleveland-based law firm where his practice focused primarily in the areas of real estate, corporate law and finance.
Mayor Weiss holds firmly to his belief in giving back to his community, as demonstrated by his volunteer service as chairman of the board of directors of The Centers for Families and Children, a not-for-profit health and human services organization, and as chairman of The City Club Forum Foundation. He is a past president and an honorary board member of Family Connections, an early childhood and family support agency, and previously served on the board of The City Club of Cleveland, an organization which promotes free speech and civic discourse as well as The Visiting Committee of the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law at Cleveland State University.
Mayor Weiss received his bachelor of arts in political science from the University of Michigan, and his law degree from The Ohio State University College of Law, where he was an editor of the law journal and served as class president.
Mayor Weiss is the owner of Juma Gallery. Founded by his late wife, Erica, Juma is located in the Sussex neighborhood. He is the proud father of Justin, a communications/government relations consultant in Washington, DC, and Marguerite, a rising junior at Brown University.
